On the PE series the mcm2801 ic is used to store calibration data as well as instruction telling the main processor into what is it installed, the main processor has a mask rom with the standard software for all the PE scales (I think). A bad mcm2801 might also jsut prevent you form writing a new calibration. Recommend this http://www.dasarodesigns.com/product/2801prog-mcm2801-eeprom-programmer/ if you need to replace and write data to one of these
